The Mediterranean that exists: five years of research into the challenges and opportunities of tourism. Priorities and trajectories that will shape the future of the area

A reflection based on recent Studies conducted by CRN-ISMed concerning the major economic, social, technological and environmental transformations that are redefining tourism in the Mediterranean, with a focus on the strategies needed to address future challenges.
Due to its geographical, cultural and geopolitical centrality, the Mediterranean represents a privileged laboratory for observing the dynamics that influence the evolution of tourism at a global level.

More specifically, in line with the overarching theme of TTG Travel Experience 2026 - The Year to Exist - the discussion will focus on the role of tourism as a phenomenon capable of generating economic, cultural and social value for territories, fostering innovation and contributing to the development of more sustainable, inclusive and resilient growth models.

The round table will bring together researchers, authors of the Studies collected in the editorial series 'Tourism Studies on the Mediterranean Region', academics, institutional representatives and industry operators, fostering an open dialogue between research and practice in order to identify the priorities and trajectories that will guide the future of the sector in the area.

The objective is to highlight the contribution of scientific research towards understanding the changes currently underway and defining strategies and policies genuinely capable of supporting the sustainable tourism development of the area in the years ahead.
